Johanna Okerlund

Johanna Okerlund is a postdoctoral fellow, affiliated with the Science, Technology, and Public Policy program, the Department of Computer Science, and the Michigan Institute for Data Science. She has a PhD in Computing and Information Systems from UNC Charlotte with a research area of Human-Computer Interaction and Interaction Design. Her dissertation focused on Makerspaces as sites of democratized technology production and investigated what makerspace leaders should do to ensure their spaces offer equitable access, afford the possibility of having a positive impact on external communities, and take responsibility for the possibility that unintended consequences may emerge. Her current project focuses on bringing ethics and justice into Computer Science education by developing an approach that draws attention to the societal impacts, political implications, and underlying values in all aspects of Computer Science.
